English as a Second Language (ESL)
AUMC offers English as a Second Language classes for adults each fall and spring. Classes meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A donation of $15 is requested. Childcare is available during some semesters.
Volunteers from AUMC and the community teach the classes. No prior experience is necessary, and training is provided. The commitment is one night per week, plus an hour or two each week for lesson planning. To volunteer please contact Julie Froom through the main office at Arlington UMC.
This ministry is provided in cooperation with ESL & Immigrant Ministries http://www.eslim.org/
GRACE Ministries
AUMC works closely with GRACE Ministries throughout the year to distribute bagged groceries on a monthly basis to over 200 immigrant families living in Northern Virgnia.
Volunteers from AUMC and the community volunteer on the 3rd Friday of every month from 10:00 am until noon to help unload donated food from the Capital Area food bank. Lunch is provided. Volunteers are also needed that night to bag the grocers and then again on Saturday morning to serve as hosts and to help distribute the food.
Volunteers can also help out on an occasional basis for toy distribution at Christmas and a number of other holidays throughout the year.
Just Neighbors, Inc.
Just Neighbors is a ministy of the Bi-District office of the United Methodist Church and was located in the basement of Arlington UMC for nearly a decade. This fall, the organization outgrew the space and is now located in offices in Bailey's Crossroads.
