Arlington UMC strives to be a community where no one ‘falls through the cracks,’ especially those elderly members of our congregation who are unable to attend worship regularly. We try to keep these members in community by offering them companionship, the sacrament of Communion, and devotional materials. By visting those who are no longer able to attend worship, we can assess their needs and make sure these needs are communicated to the whole community, as well as to the pastoral staff.
As a result, Lay Visitors were commissioned in 2007 and again in 2010 to routinely visit our members who are no longer able to leave their residences. Volunteers are assigned a list of individuals who would benefit from a visit. After sevearl months, the teams switch lists so that all of the volunteers are able to visit all of the shut-in members throughout the year. The care teams also meets as a group, along with the pastors, regularly to share their experiences and concerns and to recieve additional support and training.
If you would like to learn more about this ministry as a potential care receiver or as a volunteer, please contact the Lay Visitation Coordinator, Dorothy Plecenik.
